Our story
The Weissr story: from capex advisory work to a Capex Platform
Overview
Before Weissr was software, it was a way of thinking about capital. The software was built to scale the method.

Where it started
Two practitioners and one recurring problem
Weissr began in Sweden as Weissenrieder & Co, a consultancy led by Fredrik Weissenrieder as CEO and Daniel Lindén as COO. From 1994 they advised capital intensive companies on their investment decisions and saw at first hand how those decisions are made, where the process breaks down and what separates good Capex decisions from great ones.
From 2004 the work became more focused on Asset Strategy projects. Since then the team has helped more than 500 mills and plants analyse their asset base and decide where to invest.
The same pattern kept coming back. Projects were approved one at a time, each with a business case that said yes. Each cleared the hurdle rate. Far fewer companies asked whether a given project was the best use of the capital available, or how it affected the rest of the asset base.
Through Weissenrieder & Co, the founders developed an approach to Capex strategy based on systems thinking. Instead of treating factories, production lines, assets and investments as independent projects, the method looks at the entire asset base as one interconnected system, and asks how different combinations of investment decisions affect the company’s long-term cash flow and strategic position. The approach is described in our guide Maximising cash flow from capital.
Over the following decades the approach was applied with capital intensive companies across six continents, giving the team practical experience of how investment decisions behave in real industrial environments.
The book
Redesigning Capex Strategy
Much of what Fredrik and Daniel learned along the way went into Redesigning Capex Strategy, published by McGraw Hill in 2022. The foreword is by John Williams, CEO of Domtar, who writes: “A lot of capital allocation is based on emotion. It’s not fact-based.”
The book challenges a common way of thinking about Capex. The question is not simply whether an individual project has a good business case. It is whether that project is the best use of the capital available. Answering that means treating investments as a portfolio, comparing them on the same terms and understanding how each one contributes to the company's strategy.
It also explains why so much value is lost. Most business cases compare doing the project with doing nothing to that asset, yet assets lose competitiveness whether or not you invest. The method starts from the whole asset base instead: which sites should grow, which should be sustained and which should be run for cash, compared over the full lifecycle on cash flow.
From method to software
Building the Capex Platform
That is what makes Weissr a little unusual as a software company: the software came after the expertise, not the other way around.
Done by hand, this kind of analysis takes a small team of specialists months, which is why most companies do it once and then let the everyday Capex process take over again. In 2012 the company developed its own software, Weissr Capex, so customers could run the analysis themselves. The aim was to give finance and leadership teams a way to model alternatives, connect strategy with budgeting and execution, and make better Capex decisions without rebuilding the analysis in spreadsheets every time. The consultancy became Weissr, with offices in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Riga, Latvia.
The methodology sits most directly in Capex Strategy, where companies evaluate strategic alternatives across their operations. Capital Budgeting turns the chosen direction into funded, governed budgets. Capex Management carries each investment through requests, approvals, execution and follow up, with ERP integration for project setup and actual costs.
We call it a Capex Platform because the purpose connecting every stage is the same: better decisions about where capital goes. Today more than $700 billion in asset value has been analysed in Weissr across over 1,000 production sites worldwide.
Fredrik and Daniel have also shared the thinking in articles and in The Capex Chat, a podcast on capex and capital allocation available on Spotify, iTunes and YouTube.
In practice
What customers use it for
Weissr works with industrial companies whose investment decisions shape operations and financial performance for years. Customers include Sylvamo, Stora Enso and Vattenfall, and our customer stories cover companies such as Ultradent, Setra and Enpro.
One Nordic sawmilling company used Weissr to bring budgeting, investment requests, approvals and follow up into one system. It was up and running within nine weeks, and after digitising and standardising its Capex process the company reported time savings of more than 25%.
Today and next
The next chapter
In December 2025 Monterro became Weissr's majority owner, bringing experience in building B2B software companies and resources to support international expansion. Alexander Edström leads the company as CEO.
Our vision is to become the leading global platform for the entire Capex cycle and the decision hub in enterprises' digital and AI-driven ecosystems, with an ambition of 300 enterprise customers by 2030. We want to make greater use of connected data and AI throughout the process, while people stay responsible for the decisions.
The question at the centre of the book is still the one Weissr is designed to help answer: is this the best use of the capital we have?
